A Working Narrative

The conversation about remote work shifted from scattered musings into two opposing camps without any fundamental change in facts or reality. What flipped wasn't the evidence but which narrative is winning. One side now dominates all discussion and sets the terms for how employers are expected to act.

  • A single narrative won the information war. One vision of the future became so linguistically dominant that it set expectations for markets, employees and commentators. The other position didn't vanish, it just lost the ability to shape what everyone knows everyone knows.
  • The victory wasn't based on better arguments. The winning narrative connects to deeply emotional topics: corporate cruelty, worker fairness, capitalism's social contract. These emotional bridges made the narrative stick, not evidence about actual productivity or business needs.
  • The losing side lost in plain sight. Companies still drag employees back to offices. Remote work restrictions still happen. But the narrative framing makes these companies outliers deserving criticism rather than examples of normal business practice.
  • Something shifted without explicit coordination. Nobody announced the narrative change. No study definitively proved anything. The shift happened through cumulative linguistic patterns and which stories spread furthest. The mechanism itself is the story.
  • Common knowledge now shapes expectations faster than reality does. Employers face a rude surprise if they expect compliance with aggressive return-to-office mandates because the market has already decided what's acceptable. The question becomes not what's true but what everyone believes everyone believes is true.
