Argentina Leaps
Epsilon Theory

A radical economic overhaul might work on paper. Capital might flow in, productivity might surge, the peso might stabilize. But Argentina's new president faces an opponent no policy can defeat: the collective belief that his reforms will fail. This belief doesn't need to be true to become self-fulfilling.
- Radical change has never worked through incrementalism. Lloyd George and Garrison, despite opposite politics, understood this basic truth. Argentina's entrenched economic dysfunction can't be fixed by tinkering around the edges. A shock treatment is the only logical path to real transformation.
- The moment Milei's policies are framed as left versus right, they're already doomed. His reforms will be narrated as a "far-right experiment" by the left and as "left-wing sabotage" by the right. The mechanism itself guarantees failure becomes common knowledge.
- Private capital won't invest in a falling knife. Even investors rooting for Milei will wait for the narrative to play out, expecting recession and cheaper prices tomorrow. No one believes the government or IMF can bridge this gap. The rational move is to wait and see.
- The paradox is that everyone knows everyone knows it will fail. A single investor could see past the narrative. But knowing others won't, they make the perfectly rational choice to sit on the sidelines. This is how common knowledge defeats even sound policy.
- Success historically required something that policy can't provide. Every major non-incremental reform that took root had one thing in common: total war, a crisis so overwhelming it crushes competing narratives. Without that, Milei faces a Great Ravine where things must get much worse before they improve.
