Blast from the Past

The baseball card industry didn't collapse because collectors suddenly discovered too many cards existed. Millions knew that all along. It collapsed when a new source of information made it impossible to hide how many sellers were chasing how few buyers. What happens when the mechanism that creates artificial value through "common knowledge" encounters information it can't control?

• Markets require agreement on value, not just scarcity. Beckett became what everyone knew everyone knew about card prices. Once that became unquestionable, dealers stopped being buyers or traders and became exclusive sellers targeting informed buyers.

• Scarcity can be manufactured, but only if information stays controlled. Premium card formats, variants, foil surfaces, embedded memorabilia. Each created the appearance of rarity. The system worked perfectly until the market learned something Beckett couldn't manage.

• The system persists because those profiting need it to persist. The industry survived years after insiders knew it was false. Manufacturers and dealers kept printing because their models depended on it. Buyers sustained it for only months once they understood.

• Information asymmetry is the entire mechanism. Sellers and buyers cancel each other out in balanced markets. Once one side discovers the true ratio of supply to demand, there is only exit.

• Modern financial markets are attempting what baseball cards failed at. Making it common knowledge that everyone benefits from a specific outcome. Making certain catastrophes unthinkable. The question is whether institutions can sustain this longer than participants have to care.
