Investing with Icarus

Investors have been trained to believe that careful analysis of economic data and company fundamentals produces returns. Yet prices increasingly move on narratives and abstractions that have little connection to those facts. The strategies that worked for decades now fail, not because investors are doing them wrong, but because the market itself has changed into something that rewards narrative over analysis.

• Markets have become utilities controlled by governments and oligarchs. They now run on agreed-upon narratives rather than economic fundamentals. Prices move on stories, and the stories absorb bad news faster than reality can change them.

• Fundamental analysis doesn't fail because it's done poorly. It fails because markets no longer price in the information fundamental analysts discover. The time horizon required to prove you were right is longer than most investors can survive.

• Changing an abstraction requires far more information than changing reality. When everyone agrees on a narrative, new facts don't shift prices quickly. Missionaries explain away bad news, media promote new spins, and the contrarians who could move markets have disappeared.

• There are only a few ways to respond. Investors can sell products that don't work, design new ones, withdraw from markets entirely, insulate with real assets, or try to navigate narrative-driven markets strategically. Each choice has consequences.

• The question isn't whether to engage with these markets, but how. Traditional investment categories no longer capture how strategies interact with markets where narratives dominate. What actually works now depends on understanding this new reality.
