Men Who Wear Hats

Epsilon Theory

People call it investing when they buy Tesla stock or crypto coins. They cite technology, diversification, future value. But the actual mechanism driving these purchases isn't about fundamentals at all. It's about identity. About what you signal to the world by owning these things. Like fashion, these assets are driven by the Common Knowledge game: the need to be seen as in, as current, as part of the right crowd.

  • The mechanism is aesthetic, not rational. Buying Tesla or crypto functions identically to buying a Gucci jacket or Lucchese boots. The investor narrative layers on top, but the primary driver is making an identity statement, not generating returns.
  • Fashion always turns, but we pretend it won't. In 1930, every person on the street wore a hat. The shift away from hats wasn't gradual or rational. It happened. When fashion changes direction, the logic that justified it disappears entirely.
  • We're trained not to see this pattern. Most investors genuinely believe they're analyzing value when they're actually participating in a status game. The fashionable securities feel substantial because the narrative around them is so polished and pervasive.
  • Money can absolutely be made here, but the risk is invisible. Successful traders and creators of fashion get wealthy. The problem is the moment fashion shifts, the asset becomes worthless, and there's no warning mechanism that precedes the collapse.
  • The question becomes: what hats are you wearing without knowing it? If you can't articulate why something has value separate from its social status, you might be betting on fashion turning in your favor rather than making an investment at all.
