Institutions already know about serious misconduct within their ranks, yet nothing changes until the public becomes aware that everyone is aware. The gap between hidden knowledge and shared knowledge is not a failure of information gathering, but the architecture of power itself.

  • Knowing in private and knowing in public are different things. The NFL investigated Kareem Hunt and found misconduct, but only fired him after TMZ released security footage. The mechanism wasn't the discovery of new facts, but the creation of common knowledge that shifted accountability.
  • Powerfully held beliefs need unimpeachable evidence to shift. For Weinstein, a credible testimony was enough. For Trump or Clinton, the bar is impossibly high because half the population already holds them in fixed positions and won't accept ordinary evidence.
  • The institutions understand this completely. The system isn't designed to hide misconduct from the powerful. It's designed to prevent that misconduct from becoming something everyone knows that everyone knows.
  • This creates a vulnerability the system must neutralize. Video and photographic evidence are the only remaining tools that can bypass the manufactured consent of traditional institutions, making them the most dangerous thing to credibility itself.
  • What happens when the one tool that can create accountability gets systematically discredited? If security footage and photographs lose their unimpeachable status, the only remaining path to common knowledge is through institutional approval, which is precisely what needs to be held accountable.
