The Long Now, Pt. 3 - Wink

We've become cartoons without noticing it. Not because any single actor plotted our transformation, but because a reliable system exists that turns humans into predictable, manipulable objects at every level of modern life. The machinery that does this works identically in finance, politics, and technology. And it's now operating at global scale. The question isn't whether we're being manipulated. The question is whether we can recognize the mechanism before it becomes irreversible.

•        The five-step system is everywhere. It works the same way in poker games, financial markets, political campaigns, and social media. Introduce volatility, add credit, raise stakes, create complexity, then steal behavioral tells. Every major institution uses this playbook.

•        You don't feel it working because you believe you're winning. The system is designed so victims experience small wins, believe in their own skill, and never notice they have a negative expected return. The manipulation feels like freedom.

•        Your tells have been stolen at scale. Facebook, Google, Wall Street, political parties, central banks. They know how you'll respond before you do. They've turned behavioral prediction into a global industry.

•        The worst part is how natural it feels. This didn't require a grand conspiracy. With enough time and enough players, the system emerges on its own. It's stable. It works. And once it's working, perpetuating it requires almost no intentional effort.

•        The question is whether we can hide our tells before the system becomes irreversible. Resistance has to happen at scale and it has to target the mechanism itself. But if it doesn't happen soon, the transformation from autonomous human to programmable entity may become permanent.
