The virus had already arrived in New York City by the time officials announced its arrival, moving through emergency rooms and spreading faster than case counts could track. But the healthcare system, the public, and most leaders are still operating as if the crisis is still weeks away. The gap between what the data shows and what people believe is about to become catastrophic.

•        ER data is telling a different story than case counts. The spike in flu-like illnesses over the past two weeks mirrors neither seasonal patterns nor demographics, suggesting something new is already circulating while official numbers still say it's coming.

•        The system is built to detect problems at the worst possible moment. Cases move from ERs into hospital beds into ICUs. By the time hospital systems feel the weight, it's already too late to prepare for what's coming next.

•        Most leaders are making choices as if they have time. Some cities are preparing. Most aren't. The difference between those two groups will become visible in their healthcare systems within days.

•        The virus moves faster than acknowledgment. The people who see the data understand the acceleration. The people making decisions elsewhere are still in the phase where they think preparation is optional.

•        What happens in NYC next week is what will happen everywhere else after that. The only variable is whether other cities use this window to prepare or whether they wait to see the same ER spikes before acting.

Blanketing the country with testing sounds awesome but the speed with which the test results come back could be the next crisis IMO, and it’s easy to see through the narrative side of slow walking the results…I’m aware of a test sent off on 3/6 still awaiting results.
