They Fought the Gyre ... and the Gyre Won

A campaign designed to extract Jesus from political tribalism lasted exactly as long as it took for both sides to identify the funding sources. What should have been uncontroversial messaging about love and mercy became immediate proof of either fascist or woke conspiracy. The coverage reveals something uncomfortable: you cannot rescue something from the widening gyre by trying to pull it out from above.
• The campaign itself was almost irrelevant. Media coverage of He Gets Us focused almost entirely on who funded it and what hidden agenda that revealed, rather than engaging with any actual message in the ads.
• Both tribes interpreted the exact same ads as evidence against them. One side saw dangerous right-wing capture of Christianity. The other saw woke infiltration of the Gospel. The ads didn't change. The reading of them did.
• The language used to frame this wasn't neutral reporting. Coverage of He Gets Us used three times more directive language than typical news, with higher densities than even highly politicized topics like elections.
• Good intentions cannot withstand top-down solutions in a fully polarized environment. The campaign assumed that enough money and creative talent could counteract tribal gravitational pull. It couldn't.
• The only thing that survives polarization is what builds itself outside it. Communities that isolate themselves from the gyre and pursue concrete rather than abstract goals have historically preserved what matters. Nothing large and centralized escapes the pull.
