This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things

The 2016 presidential campaign wasn't decided by facts. It was decided by how effectively certain narratives infected the public mind and persisted in media coverage. Data from 291,000 articles reveals a stark asymmetry: one candidate was relentlessly battered by a single meme that dominated coverage, while the other benefited from fragmented attacks that spiked and faded. Neither outcome was accident, and both reveal how media institutions function as sophisticated meme-delivery systems, not truth-telling operations.
- The Emails! meme consumed 6% of all coverage about one candidate for an entire year. Most political narratives spike and fade within weeks. This one persisted with unusual virulence, creating a drumbeat effect that no single factual issue could justify.
- The same mainstream media outlets used neutral language about Trump's alleged KKK associations while framing his opponent's email practices as a scandal. If coverage were driven by actual wrongdoing, the sentiment would be reversed. Instead, it revealed whose narrative the institutions were incentivizing.
- Trump received 35% more total coverage than his opponent and significantly more positive sentiment across major outlets. This came from media organizations whose leadership was ideologically opposed to him, suggesting something systemic was driving the amplification.
- Meme persistence matters far more than meme accuracy. A narrative that gets repeated constantly with emotional intensity shapes behavior regardless of whether it reflects reality. Doctors, advisors, and citizens respond to the meme, not the underlying truth.
- Media outlets function as institutionalized vectors for meme contagion, and they thrive under conditions of political fragmentation. Higher ratings, more engagement, more subscribers. The system works perfectly for them. The question is whether it works for us.
